ABSTRACT: Public lands are subject to increasingly complex and widespread environmental stresses that transcend traditional management boundaries. Managing multiple uses of public lands requires multi-scale information to quantify the effects of natural and human influences on natural resource conditions. The USGS, in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management and the Great Plains Landscape Conservation Cooperative, has developed multi-scale assessment methods for the southern Great Plains to address priority management issues identified by a diverse set of stakeholders. In this presentation, we highlight some of the decision-support tools developed to address the potential effects of two key change agents, development and climate, on grassland communities. We use the broad-scale assessment methods to identify potential vulnerability of priority grassland communities currently and under several climate change scenarios. This information can be used for developing regional strategies and identifying areas that have potential for conservation, restoration, or development and may help to foster collaboration among land management agencies.
